Will the religious tradition of wearing a burka come to an end?

I read in a blog today on lemondrop that the Belgium government was going to vote today to decide whether or not to ban burkas in public places.

However, according to the Daily Mail, “MPs were hours from voting on proposals to outlaw full face veils when parliament was thrown into disarray with the resignation of prime minister Yves Leterme after only five months in office.”

Now they plan to vote on the ban in mid-May; one day after France intends to vote on it.

In the blog, according to the Daily Mail, MP Daniel Bacquelaine said: “The notion of recognising people in the street is essential to maintain public order”

“It’s also a question of human dignity. The full face veil turns a woman into a walking prison, and we have widespread cross-party support to have this item outlawed,” said Bacqueline.

I think it’s wrong for the government to try and eliminate a tradition that has been around for thousands of years. It should be the right and choice of the woman.

“If the proposed law is passed, Muslim women wearing a face veil in public would be fined £110, but if caught a second time would face a week’s jail term.”
